Filing requirements are per state statute, available on the Texas Secretary of State website, and those of the City of Iowa Colony Charter, Article 3, (The City Council Qualifications). Each person who becomes a candidate for mayor or councilmember shall meet the following qualifications:
MAYOR
Be a Citizen of the United States
Age- 21 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election or on the date of appointment, as applicable.
Have not been determined by a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be:
-Totally mentally incapactitated or
-Partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote.
Be a qualified voter of the city
Have been a resident of the territory from which the office is elected or appointed for 12 months
immediately preceding the following date:
-The date of the regular filing deadline for a Candidate's application for a place on the ballot
-For a write in candidate, the date of the election for which the candidate's name is written in
-For an appointee to the council, the date of the appointment
-If territory is annexed into the city within the 12 month period described in this section, then the person's residence in that territory
before the annexation counts toward the residency requirements.

SATURDAY, MAY 4, 2024- UNIFORM ELECTION DATE
The May 4, 2024, General Election will be held jointly thru Brazoria County Elections office. Vote Centers will be located throughout Brazoria County with the nearest location for early voting at 7313 Corporate Drive, Manvel, Tx. The nearest voting center on Election Day is 7313 Corporate Drive, Manvel, Tx., however you may vote in person at any voting center throughout Brazoria County. If, dropping off a mail in ballot it must be dropped off to the Elections office in Angleton. Filing for a place on the ballot is set by state statute and will run from January 17, 2024 to February 16, 2024. Find additional election-related dates and information on the Texas Secretary of State website (posted in accordance with TX. Legis. H.B.305, effective September 1, 2019.)
Elections Administrator
The City Secretary serves as the Elections Administrator for the City of Iowa Colony.
The duties of the City Secretary are limited to:
- Accepting and filing the various applications, affidavits and statements.
- Noting the date and time of filing thereon.
The City Secretary is not expected to judge or comment upon the timeliness or sufficiency of reports filed. The City of Iowa Colony cannot provide advice on matters of election or campaign finance law.
