Arnetta Murray is the only child of Rev James & Oneder Hicks. Her parents have been married 60 years and they still live in the same house where Arnetta grew up in Houston, TX. Her dad, a Baptist minister instilled in Arnetta God, family, and service to the community. Arnetta was raised in Houston; TX and she went to High School at HISD Ross Shaw Sterling High School. Arnetta is a graduate of LeTourneau University; she obtained a bachelor’s degree in business management. She also has a master’s degree in education from Concordia University.

Arnetta is the proud mother of 5 grown children. Aaron (31), Rachel (29), Jared (28), and twins Larry & Lawrence (24). After an unwelcoming divorce. Arnetta decided to use her energy by getting involved with community activism. This led her to run for Brazoria County Commissioner and Alvinisd School Board where she lost and learned. Then in 2018- 2019, Mayor Michael Byrum-Bratsen of Iowa Colony and Council appointed Arnetta to position 2. While on the council, Arnetta approved many ordinances. To name a few, law enforcement initiatives, improvements to public safety, economic development, and continuous work on lowering property taxes. On 11/3/2021, Arnetta was voted in by a landslide and she’s serving her 3rd term as Councilwoman position 2.

When Arnetta isn’t on the Council, she’s a Special Education Teacher at HISD and a member of the Hermann Park Rotary Club of Houston. Rotary International is the largest service organization in the world. Their stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders to provide humanitarian service and advance goodwill and peace worldwide. It is a non-political and non-religious organization. Arnetta sits on the board for small cities of the Texas Municipal League (TML). Arnetta is a member of LULAC, NAACP, and HRC. Community involvement and activism are what Arnetta thrives on. Arnetta Murray has testified numerous times before the Texas House and Senate and she’s a part of many community organizations (Local Progress & HUFAF). Arnetta has participated in many high-profile marches where change took place. Arnetta is a 16-year resident in Brazoria County, and she is so grateful to be on the council of the City of Iowa Colony. She always has the City of Iowa Colony, TX (Brazoria County) at the forefront wherever she goes.
